Taiwan Photonics Industry Overview |
After vigorous development for over two decades, the Taiwan photonics industry now sees the fruit of success. The scale of the industry including Flat Panel Display sector in 2007 surpassed NTDS 2 trillion barrier (approximately USD $63.3 billion), accounting for 17% in the global market and it is very likely to break USD 90 billion in 2011, according to the statistics from Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA). Some made-in-Taiwan photonics products, such as LED chips and packaging, STN/TFT-LCD panels, CD-ROMs and drivers, digital still cameras and CIS modules have secured the world's top three berths in terms of production values. The country's rising PV industry has gone up from the world's no.5 in 2006 to rank no.4 in 2007. This year, the solar cell is full of potential to jump to No. 3. Even though FPD contributed the largest chunk of the photonics industry in Taiwan, LED lighting and solar cells have revolutionized the entire industry and become the primary focuses of Taiwan technology policies.
